Mary pauses and ponders in her heart

VERŻJONI BIL-MALTI

Grace: I ask for the grace to share in Mary’s way of listening: to ponder, to trust, and to hold my life prayerfully in my heart.

Read: Luke 2:8–20 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,  and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Reflect:

  • What stayed with you from the passage? What phrase stuck with you?
  • How do you think Mary lived through these experiences?

Mary is often shown as active, generous, courageous, and she is. But Luke gives us another image of her: “Mary treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)

Mary didn’t immediately rush to spread the news through action. She took the experience inward. This internal processing, this prayerful reflection in silence, allowed the deep meaning of events to settle and take root within her spirit. She moved from observation to internalisation. Look at the past year and internalise what happened throughout the journey.

A. Looking Back – Treasuring

Mary treasured what had happened.

  • What moments from the past year return to me again and again? Joys… disappointments…
  • Don’t judge. Just notice what asks to be “held.”

B. Looking at the Present – Being Where I Am

  • Mary stands in the Temple — present, not in control.
  • Where am I in my life right now? What brings me life? What drains it?

C. Looking Ahead – Resisting the Rush

Mary hears about the future but does not act immediately.

  • Is there an area where I need permission not to act yet?
  • What might God be asking me to listen to, rather than fix?

Conversation. Speak to the Lord spontaneously like a friend speaks to a friend.

Conclusion: Is there something which you will take away with you from this time of prayer?

Witnesses

Dorothy Day – Action Rooted in Contemplation

Dorothy Day worked tirelessly for justice, but she never separated action from prayer. She believed that without silence and listening to God, even good actions can lose their direction. For her, pausing was not wasting time — it was how she learned to act with love rather than anger.

Key message:Pause is not the enemy of justice — it is its foundation.

“My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and the reading of the psalms.” Dorothy Day
